Comcast is doing another speed upgrade rollout...

... but this one is more hush hush. Long story short, I got upgraded from 50 mbit blast! to 105 mbit extreme package. This was done after an hour and a half on chat and haggling a $249 installation fee down to $39.95 and then completely having it waived off after even the rep realized it was ridiculous to charge me for something he toggled on his own end.

Your mileage may vary (I am in CA Bay Area) but - may worth a shot! If you have your own modem, you need to make sure you have a Docsis 3.0 one or else you will not see those kinds of speeds.

For what it's worth - I am getting 120 mbit down and 23 up.

Protip - call to cancel your service to get upgraded or get discounted. After hearing that story about the guy that spent 20 minutes trying to cancel his service I had to give it a try myself before Comcast decided to change their policies.

I did that last week actually. My bill reduced from 123.94 to 79.99 for 2 years with the addition of HBO. (pre tax/fees prices).

I am actually on a contract now - I called to cancel last fall and got my bill down from $180 to $125; my TV package is pretty hardcore (wife loves it) but the 105 mbit plan for the same price... can't beat that. I think Comcast is freaking out a bit because they are slated to lose something to the tune of 3 million customers since Google Fiber is gonna roll out in the entire San Jose metropolitan area... right in Google's backyard.

Just tried for fun. No go .. they tried to charge me the $249 followed by reduced fee. Said no to both as I don't even really need the speed upgrade and trying to not spend extra money on anything unnecessary.

Its an honest question. TWC offers 50mbs where I am but I can't think of a need for it.

Clearly you do have a need for it but I'm just trying to think of other reasons for myself

Gaming is more about ping and latency, correct?

dbizzle - how much did they try to drop it to? If it's $40 - then chances are that they know full well that they will just need to flip a switch. On my end - they did that same thing and ended up not charging me a penny.

Realistically yes. A 25 mbit connection will be MORE than enough for pretty much 95% of the population on this planet. Any more and you're doing some serious shit.

105 mbit gives me two benefits: my usenet indexer is now running at full throttle without even dinging my bandwidth AND I can get a full 1080p rip of... PBS documentaries (think 10 GB files) in about 10-11 minutes.
