New MDI SW update:

FNR32

Ready to race!

Orient Express

Ready to race!
And if you're not then how do you do it?

1. Download the file "mdi.bin.enc' from the VW website to your computer.

1a. Once the file mdi.bin.enc is on your computer, move it to the top level of an SD card.

2. In the car, hook up a MDI to USB cable in the MDI connector in the center console.

3. Connect an SD car reader to the USB cable, then turn on the Car radio.

4. Select Media, and then MDI on the radio, and if the SD revision is for your radio, the radio will automatically start to install it and will give you a message that it is installing the SW. At the end of the install, it will tell you that the update is complete.

5. Remove the SD card and USB cable, plug back in the iPod cable, and then reboot the radio.

6. To reboot the radio, hold down the 3 keys that are next to the CD slot until the screen goes black:
< > keys and the "day/night" key.

7. After a bit the radio will be rebooted and you are good to go.

Anyone in the South Jersey / Philly area I can help you with this. I have the cable and a flash drive ready to go. Takes but a few seconds.

It actually works now!

I am totally ganking this from vwvortex...

This works, the skipping is gone and the lag in the UI is now totally acceptable. The stereo actually works as it should now.

I downloaded the new mdi.bin.enc file from

http://www.volkswagen-zubehoer.de/fileadmin/pdf/media_in/mdi.bin.enc

and just installed it. It is definitely a new SW revision, and much bigger than the last one. One note, after installing the SW, be sure to reboot the radio (push the <,>, & day/night buttons simultaneously)

There is also a new compatibility document here:

http://www.volkswagen-zubehoer.de/fileadmin/pdf/media_in/MDI_Empfehlungsliste_V002_6_MGE_VWZ_deutsch.pdf

You can use Google translate to read it if you are not fluent in German.

Is there a way to check what version of firmware you currently have? And when was this firmware released?

I'm wondering if my ipod interface is considered "slow". It's definitely not speedy, but I would say it's about on par with the general slowness of everything else on the RNS-510. Does this speed things up any more than that?

hhuuuuuuuhhhhhhh. I tried updating my MDI and was unsuccessful with both enc and mso files. The enc (K45) file gave me an error saying it could not be updated. The mso (KW22) file just didn't work. I have an RCD-510...

Has anyone heard of or experienced issues with installing the update themselves (i.e. bricked hu). Just got off the phone with my dealership, they keep referring to an ecu update, which I don't need. Looks like I'll be buying the cable and do it myself.

I used this update on the premium 8 (rcd510) touchscreen stereo that doesn't have nav.

It solves the skipping issue, and the slowness of the UI.
