SFvalleyGTi1
Go Kart Champion
After getting my GTI I was itching to begin modding it but I wasn't sure where to start. I decided to dive into some cheap mods while I researched on the more important things. I read about Black Forest Industries and all the mounts they sell. I could not find anything negative about the company or their product.
Purchase
I decided to make a purchase of the BFI stg1 torq mount insert from HStuning.com because they had a special on free shipping. The mount was shipped within 2 days, as I checked my door step daily nothing had arrived. After a few days I received an email from Jon @ HStuning stating they had shipped my mounts to another customer in error. I was pretty pissed that this happened but was assured by Jon that everything would be taken care of promptly. A few days later I received the package and was pretty damn happy to see it after waiting about a week.
Install
The install was pretty straight forward, get the car up in the air with jack stands. Loosen the bolt that holds the stock mount/dog bone. Spray the stock mount and BFI mount with Silicone spray. Insert BFI mount into stock mounting space, it required some pressure to get it all the way in. You dont need a mallet or anything crazy... Once the mount is in, you unscrew the factory bolt and then insert a retaining washer which is supplied by BFI. After the washer, you place a larger washer and then a bolt... torqing the bolt to 74ft lbs. It took me about 20 minutes to do, toughest part is probably breaking loose the factory mount bolt.
Product/Quality
The BFI stage 1 mount is 70a durometer (lowest durometer available?), its bigger than I expected it to be but its also pretty flimsy/soft. In the past I had a hockey puck style mount on my Mk3 jetta which made a lot of vibrations. I didn't expect the BFI mount to create any vibrations based on its design...
Once I had the BFI insert installed, I turned on the car and didn't feel any vibrations. I took the car for a drive and was amazed at how easily the car goes into gears. It seems like the transmission is much smoother when rowing through gears and theres no more jerky feeling.
I tested the car in reverse and was surprised at the amount of vibrations. The vibrations in reverse is a lot, to the point where I'm sure it'll create rattles down the road when the car has 40K+ miles. The vibrations in reverse only seem to occur at a specific RPM, around 700-900rpm anything above or below this range the vibrations are minimal or none.
Overall I'm satisfied with the purchase of BFI Stg1 insert and HStuning. I highly doubt the BFI stage 2 mount would create more vibrations at idle than stage 1, but without doubt it would be too much when in reverse especially for a new car.
I forgot to take pictures during the install, but here is one post install...
