Days ago, I got APR stage 1, although there was an increase in power I wasn't satisfied. Thinking of going to a K04, I came across someone selling their BSH Race Intake.
Here's before/After Pictures.
Purchase
Lurking around Golfmk6 and the various other forums, I came across someone selling his BSH Race Intake. Although P2spec.com has the LOWEST prices on BSH products, I shot this member an offer and he accepted.
Install
Removing the factory intake/box was simple, a screw or two and just some pulling. Looking at the BSH installation guides everything seemed simple and not taking much time to get done, boy was I wrong! Getting the BSH silicone hose to go over the MAF was a pain the arse! The hose barely goes over the MAF and was a struggle to make it fit. Once I got the hoses on the MAF, I thought the hard part was over... NOPE! Getting the damn hose claps tight on the turbo was another issue. The same spacing is small, really small area, where a ratchet won't work, a screw driver doesn't have the power to tighten the clap well. See below...
Once that was done the other tough spot was getting the damn screw mount the intake pipe to the area above the heat shield. The pipe takes up most of the real estate and you have to screw in the bolt without seeing where it goes. Again pain in the ass but after sometime it just lined up and went in.
I will mention that the BSH instructions were off because they have not updated the instructions for the TSI intake they created verse the FSI Intake instructions they do have. One has the MAF mounted inside the intake pipe and the other uses the factory MAF housing.
Quality
The BSH items were great quality. I'm not sure where their products are sourced from, but everything had a nice BSH stamp, even the hose clamps. Welds on the pipe were clean and thick. Inside the pipe, some parts were smoothed out for better air flow (areas near welds). The intake pipe comes with many options incase you decide to go different routes, DV relocation etc. Nothing from BSH seemed cheap or flimsy. I chose the BSH intake over the others because the filter is free flowing, nothing is keeping it from sucking up air. Plus it also comes with that tray that directs cold air from outside directly to the intake filter. So pretty much its not being restricted on the low end with a enclosure like Carbonio.
Performance
You can read my APR Stage 1 review HERE. After installing the BSH Race Intake, I can say without a doubt it gave the APR tune the juice it needed to perform. APR tune with factory intake is a big waste, the car seemed sluggish like a kid waking up in the AM. With the BSH intake the car just pulls hard, really hard! 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear all pull equally as hard, at times it feels like the tires are about to lose grip.
I wouldn't say the car sounds a lot louder than stock. There is a noticeable increase is sound from the BSH Race intake. The DV is much much more apparent now, but nothing that would bother you. I would say from 30 to 90 MPH the car just pulls like a freight train compared to stock, but above 90mph you will notice the car start to lose momentum. This is probably due to boost dropping off at higher RPM's.
Final Thoughts
If I could do it again, I would still get a BSH Race intake. Although I wouldn't stress myself over doing the Race pipe install! If you only have access to 91 octane, and are thinking of getting a tune, make sure you get free flowing intake at the same time otherwise you'll be disappointed with the tune.
