E36 M3 Project Car Build

TheGTIChannel

Ready to race!
Like others on this forum, I am now the owner of a non-MK6 car, but liked this forum so much I decided to stick around a little bit longer ;).

The car I bought on 8/17 is a 1995 BMW E36 M3 with 140k Miles. Since it's a '95 it has the OBDI 3.0L S50 engine rather than the 3.2L S52 that came in 1996. The car has had 6 owners but has a clean title and Carfax with no accidents reported. It was originally Dakar Yellow but has been re-painted "Lamborghini Fly Yellow" along the way :). It is one of the few US E36s that were made with the hurricane interior. One of the previous owners fitted an unbranded exhaust system that I ended up being quite fond of. As awesome as the APR TBE sounded on the GTI, the old BMW I-6 is one of my favorite engines in term of exhaust notes.

My goal with this car is to go for a daily driver that will be 80% street, 20% track oriented. Handling and performance will be my priorities. I will also address any interior/cosmetic issues as I go along with the project.

Overall, the car runs quite well for its age. Current *functional* known issues that I will have to address (I will update this list as I discover more problems):

-Rear trailing arm bushings are destroyed. *FIXED*
-Front control arm bushings are worn. *FIXED*
-Rear subframe bushings are worn.
-Needs front and rear subframe reinforcements.
-Power Steering is leaking. *FIXED*
-Rear passenger output shaft is leaking. *FIXED*
-Belts are worn out. *FIXED*
-Springs/shocks are shot. *FIXED*
-Sway reinforcement tabs need to be addressed.
-Tires are bald (fixed).
-Worn down front/rear pads and rotors. *FIXED*
-Windshield wipers are worn out. *FIXED*
-Windshield wiper pump broken.
-Missing screws everywhere.
-Turn signals malfunction. *FIXED*
-Fender liner is loose and rubbing on tire. *FIXED*

On top of these are all of the cosmetic things that must be addressed such as rips in seats, trim missing/falling off, etc.

Some cell phone photos from the this weekend:

Let the fixing begin...

Day 3 of owning the car. As you can see the original tires were done with. The previous owner (worryingly) used the car for amateur drifting. Fitted the car with Hankook V12s (Front- 225 40ZR17, and Rear- 245 40ZR17). Grip heaven :happyanim:.

I also picked up an X-Brace for a steal of a deal and had it put on while the car was on a lift. This is an OEM brace that can be found on the E36 Lightweight and Convertible models. Offers more rigidity than the original bar.

I also got new Bosch windshield wipers since the OEM ones couldn't do their job anymore...

More to come! :happyanim:

Man, I really love this car, it looks great in that color. So you sold your VW? This '95 is your only car? Brave man! I'm excited to check out your progress.

Looks nice for it's age! The 36 M3 is my favorite generation so far. My dad has a 98 328is, and it certainly is not my favorite car to work on :D But for as slow as they are, they sure are fun to drive!

Also, wtf is up with those goofy tail pips I see on almost EVERY e36?:yikes:

Sounds about right for the average e36. I hope you paid less than 7k for it in that shape.
Was the cooling system replaced yet?

Also use pelican parts they are good peeps.

Thanks! I wasn't to sure about it, it draws a lot of attention (pulled over twice in the three days I've had it), but t won me over. Gives the car character :p.

Favorite gen for me as well! I like the square look. I actually like the look of the tail pipes :iono: to each their own I guess!

Sounds like a lot of work but it does look cool, good luck.

The work is part of the reason for getting it :D. I enjoy a car that keeps me busy. And Thank You!

Got it for 5.5K. Cooling system is stock. It's on the to-do list.

5.5 is really not a bad deal for that esp if the paint job was done well.
