I just updated my iPhone 4S (AT&T) from 5.0 to 5.1 and now it says 4G where it used to say 3G. I'm confused

HSPA+ is 4G but mostly a upgraded 3G. The iphone 4s supports that. It isn't real 4G though like Verizons 4G LTE.

I just downloaded it to my iPad 2. I am wifi. I haven't noticed any difference.

It's not any faster.

Well you are on WiFi, so either the Internet connection or the WiFi network itself is quite pokey.

Wifi...but my router is old. Not sure what's up.

turn off the wifi on the iphone or ipad, then back on and start again. i had that issue and it seemed like it just hanged.
reboot the router too.
