Golf MK7 Mechanical Discussion

7 speed DSG, about time. Its been in the Polo GTI for years. I was wondering if they would do a 7 or even 8 speed DSG in the new model.

The German brochure online indicates the availability of a 7 speed DSG.

The 7 speed DSG has been around for a while, but it's for less powerful applications than the GTI. That said, a Golf 1.8T with a 7 speed DSG would pretty much own the compact market.

the more i think about it the more it seems that the golf will become more of a viable option to the budget minded enthusiast. not that a new loaded golf is 'cheap', but if you are generally using it as a daily driver, like it or not enthusiasts (me being one of them) you are rarely touching the potential of your stage 1, 2, k04 etc. GTIs. you just aren't. ask me how much on a daily basis I really push the boundaries of my car's handling, or the powermill, and i'm 'only' stage 1. on the way to work? on the way back? in traffic? even a stock GTI is more often than not, stifled by real world driving conditions.

enter the new Golf. Sharing the Audi platform, multi-link suspension and a 1.8TSI that is basically better in every way to the current 5 cyl, which will be able to be easily tuned to produce output that approaches that of a stock mk7 GTI, with superior mileage.. why not get the Golf? i probably wouldn't and many who are balls deep in all their power upgrades might not, but then you got guys like GunKata talking about how they might get a Prius. so you never know. moral of the story is that practicality rears its ugly head when you least expect it and if someone can get a well optioned TSI golf for under $20k vs. a well optioned GTI for closer to $30k, whats stopping them? why get the GTI? better wheels? you can buy better wheels for the golf? Slightly better suspension? how often will you notice? better mileage, no. the Golf will get better mileage.. More power. yes, there is that.

^^I agree, it does blur the lines more between the two.

It will come down more to available equipment and appearance with the next gen.

yes, mainly appearance. the GTI will be more aggressive no matter what, but it might not be in the direction current GTI owners would like. maybe I'll eat my words and end up in a Golf. probably not, but if I can get a nice well optioned turbo hatch that I can tune and get better mileage than I'm getting now, why not? also closes the gap more with the current TDI. many, many possibilities.

doesn't the Euro/ROW R already have 276hp?

fucking figures

+1... Nope ROW is rated at 267hp, weird in my April 2012 Car Magazine issue the Mk7 R was rumored to be more around 290hp, and there were some "interesting" pics about the upcoming GTI

^^ that, the 7 DSG so far available on the polo was a dry-clutch system that could not safely withstand the torque figures of the GTI and R. The newer 7 box is already found on the TTRS and RS3 and uses a wet-clutch system (just as our DSG 6).
That being said I think that Porsche is developing a wet-clutch 8 gear DSG

Why would you assume the 1.8T be any easier to tune than the new 2.0T? VW or not, the industry as a whole is moving to modular head with integrated exhaust runner and turbo. The idea is to make the car easier and cheaper to make....

Yea, I can see the new Golf getting that dry-clutch gearbox, but there's no way the GTI is getting a taste of TT-RS level tech.

Speculation at this point but I'm fairly certain my opinion will hold after we know more: I'd rather get a Mk7 base Golf 1.8T + APR k04 than a Mk7 GTI for the same price.

Assuming the gearbox could handle K04. There's still a lot we don't know.

not sure who said that, but you can't tune the current golf 2.5 unless you are retarded and want to shell for a turbo kit. now you can own a golf and tune it to make figures comparable to stock GTI numbers or better, all with a lighter weight platform and better fuel economy.

the british metrics of mpg versus the america mpg is not measured exactly the same way...for example america mpg of 24 mpg is equivalent to british mpg 28 <-- i learned that fact on my gti's computer setting thing lol:D

The UK gallon is simply larger than the US gallon.

Not just a unit difference though. MPG rating published by EPA, environment Canada or whatever regulatory body from that country is also not standardized between different countries. The test cycle for each is based on the driving pattern of the said country, and they are not the same. The amount of load, highway cruising speed, % of each kind of driving condition included...etc are all different. There are no point comparing a EPA number to EU or UK number of the same car....

Right, I was just speaking strictly in real world terms.
